The checklist · short-form editing

The tells that make your video look amateur.

Thirty-two named defects and how to fix each one. Not a better camera. Not a bigger budget. Fixes to the video you already shot.

Fast fixes

Settings and cosmetics. Ten minutes or less.

C1
Thin, roomy audio
Echo off bare walls, mic too far away. The biggest tell there is, and it gives you away faster than bad video ever will. Get the mic about a foot from your face, record in a room with soft things in it, run a light noise-reduction pass.
C2
Music louder than your voice
If they strain to hear a word, they leave, and they won't know why. Voice on top, music underneath. Play it back on your phone speaker at half volume. Lose a word, it's still too loud.
C3
Light coming from the wrong direction
Light behind or above you, face darker than the wall. Turn and face the light. A window works. Never shoot with the bright thing behind your head.
C4
Grain from a dark room
Shooting somewhere too dark and letting the phone push the sensor. Reads as cheap instantly. Add real light. Don't drag the exposure slider up, that just makes the grain worse.
C5
Framing that's off
Too much empty space above your head, or your face parked dead center. Eyes in the top third, a little room above the head, not a ceiling of nothing.
C6
Shaky handheld
Wobble on a shot that had no reason to move. Brace against a wall or table, or turn stabilization on. If it didn't need to walk, stop walking.
C7
The default CapCut font
Everyone has seen it a thousand times and clocks it on sight. Pick one clean bold font and use that same one on every video. Using the same one every time is what makes it look like a choice.
C8
Too many fonts and colors
Three fonts, four colors, two animations in one video. Cut it to one font, one or two colors, one animation. That's the whole kit.
C9
Captions hidden behind the buttons
Text tucked under the caption bar or behind the like and comment icons. Keep captions in the middle third, clear of the bottom bar and the icons on the right.
C10
Captions landing late
Words showing up a beat after you say them. It breaks the read. Auto-caption it, then drag the timing so each word hits when you say it, not after.
C11
Brightness jumping between cuts
One clip warm, the next cold, inside the same scene. Put the clips next to each other before you export and match exposure and color. Doesn't have to be perfect. It just can't jump.
C12
Numbers you can't read
A stat too small, gone too fast, on a busy background. Bigger, longer, on a clean background. If they can't read it in one glance, it's just decoration.

Structural

The stuff you can feel but can't name.

S1
Dead space between your sentences
A little silence after every line. Doesn't feel like much, but it adds up to around 8 seconds of nothing in a 45-second video. The number one thing killing videos that are otherwise fine. Cut the gaps. Butt every line right up against the next.
S2
Preamble before the point
"Hey guys, so today I wanted to talk about." Two to four seconds that earn nothing. Delete it. Start on the first sentence that actually matters.
S3
Giving the answer away too early
The payoff lands at 4 seconds and there's no reason to watch second 5. Hold it. Set it up early, pay it off near the end.
S4
Nothing left unresolved
No open question means the viewer can leave any second and lose nothing. Open a loop early and keep it open. Give them a reason to stay for the answer.
S5
Not enough cuts
Eight seconds on one angle with nothing changing. Attention drifts even when the words are good. Change something every few seconds. A cut, a zoom, some b-roll, a new angle.
S6
Too many cuts
A cut every half second so nothing gets to land. That's not pace, it's noise. Let the shots breathe. Cut when the meaning changes, not on a timer.
S7
Cutting in the wrong spot
Cutting through the middle of a thought instead of the gap between two. Feels off even when you can't say why. Cut between ideas, not through one.
S8
Sentences that drag
Long sentences full of clauses and qualifiers. Written English read aloud. Keep spoken sentences short. One idea each. Say it the way you'd say it to a friend.
S9
Flat, vague language
Abstract words with no picture in them. "It really helps a lot with engagement." Say the concrete version. Something they can picture beats a vague claim every time.
S10
Three ideas in one video
All three end up half-explained and nobody remembers any of them. One idea per video. The other two are their own videos.
S11
A weak first frame
Your spoken hook is fine but frame one is you mid-blink against a blank wall. Make the first frame deliberate. Movement, a strong expression, text, anything. It gets half a second to earn the next one.
S12
Wrong energy for the video
Full podcast delivery on a 30-second short, or forced hype on a calm topic. Match how you're talking to the length and the subject. Don't perform an energy the video doesn't have.
S13
No real ending
The video trails off or stops mid-breath. No landing means no rewatch, share, or follow. End on an actual last line. The payoff is the last real beat. After that, one closing line, then stop.
S14
Text hook fighting the spoken hook
Two different hooks in the same two seconds. They read one and hear the other and take in neither. Make them work together. Text says one thing, your voice says another, together they pull.

Upstream

Editing can't fix these. So don't try.

U1
Nobody wants the topic
A great edit of something nobody wants is still something nobody wants. No amount of editing fixes this. Check people actually want the idea before you polish it.
U2
The account is about five things
Nothing builds on anything else and no audience ever forms. Pick a lane. Let the account be about one thing.
U3
No reason to watch you over anyone else
The same information is on a thousand accounts and yours doesn't add anything. Bring the thing only you have. Your angle, your proof, your experience.
U4
Not posting enough
Once every ten days. There's no editing trick for too few reps. Post more. Craft can't make up for volume this low.
U5
Talking to nobody in particular
Aimed at "people" instead of one specific person. Write it to one real viewer. Picture them before you hit record.
U6
Wrong format for the idea
A 12-minute idea jammed into 30 seconds, or a 30-second idea stretched to 12 minutes. Match the length to the idea. Not everything is a short.

Fix these and your video stops looking amateur.

That's the promise. Not views. Not going viral. Just a video that doesn't give you away anymore.
